This session considers the challenges for parents and carers of finding reliable information and resources. Having good information to hand is critical to improving outcomes for children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing Never has more information been available to so many people. But finding reliable information can be a real challenge and finding the best way to use this information is also a challenge.

What Else?

There are a range of problems and types of problems that we see in children and young people. These difficulties can be grouped into problem types. The aim is to not repeat the existing MindEd content but rather to highlight what can be found and why it matters. Although this session does not cover every topic in detail, the material within these sessions is highly relevant to parents grappling with difficulties.

Who Can Help Us?

This session covers specialist CAMHS and also includes the range of roles from teachers to SENCOs etc, the third sector, GPs, CAMHS, paediatrics etc. It is advice to parents themselves rather than to professionals engaging with the system. It covers when schools can help, when specialist services are needed, carer’s assessments and how to get one, treatment services, tiers, CAMHS referrals, thresholds, and supporting a child while waiting for assessment / treatment and through the journey.

Everyday Parenting

This session provides parents with basic information and advice about everyday parenting. It is not intended to address significant emotional and behavioural difficulties. Nor is It intended for parents with children whose behaviour is challenging.

Eating Disorders

This session gives parents basic information and advice about the eating disorders: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating and similar behaviour, that do not usually meet threshold criteria. It is not intended to address childhood obesity or infant eating difficulties.

Transitions During Education

This session offers advice for parents / carers on what to expect and how to prepare for and handle themselves and their children during educational transitions, which can be stressful for those involved.

Transition To Adult Services

This session provides parents and carers with information to help them understand the processes involved when a young person moves from children’s to adult services. It explains how the role of the parent/carer changes and the challenges this can bring. It also suggests ways that a parent/carer could support a young person through this transition.

This session builds on the real life experiences and understanding of parents and carers in dealing with the mental health challenges of their children and families, including themselves. It aims to provide simple, helpful, tips and advice that will help all parents/carers in practical ways.

Keeping Ourselves Strong

This session is directed at parents and carers and covers developing the resilience to keep strong. It includes advice on learning about your child's difficulties, looking after yourself, talking to friends and family, getting support, and getting others (eg, professionals) to recognise a parent/carer's expertise in their child and achieve collaboration.
